Mentor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

Program Description:

A culturally safe workplace (CSW) embeds diversity, respect and inclusion into workplace cultures, creating positive workplace experience. CSW is supported by building cultural capability in workplaces and employees to increase retention and progression of Aboriginal people.

This program composes three key components – cultural safety in workplace, communications and mentoring skills. Mentoring skills will be developed with ‘culturally appropriate’ role modelling, counselling, acceptance/confirmation, and relationship. Through the 3 day program, the participant will acquire the following knowledge and skills to become an effective mentor to Aboriginal workers:

  • knowledge of the Australian context issues such as deaths in custody, stolen generations, survival, reconciliation, cultural identity, cultural protocols, history, kindship systems, family responsibilities and cultural knowledge
  • skills to apply acquired knowledge into practice, to learn from and value other people’s different perspectives and cultural identities, gaining increased cultural respect and awareness; to build a strong and positive relationship.

Culturally safe and appropriate mentoring brings various benefits to mentees, mentors and organisations.

  • Mentee Benefits: career satisfaction, motivation, self-confidence, interpersonal growth, increased skill and knowledge development, networking opportunities, recognition, empowerment, enhanced decision making and the ability to balance work and family life
  • Mentor Benefits: career satisfaction, improved communication skills, respect for others and empowerment
  • Organisation Benefits: improved productivity, the ability to attract and retain employees, employee loyalty, enhanced leadership, improves strategic and succession planning and aids in change facilitation.
